De Brabandere
At De Brabandere in Bavikhove, the family has been at the helm for five generations. This brewery made its name with its multi-award winning Bavik premium pils and its robust blonde Kwaremont ‘koersbier’. 6.6% not only denotes the alcohol content of this climber’s beer, it is also the incline of the most famous ‘kuitenbijter’, or ‘calf biter’ included in the Tour of Flanders: the Kwaremont Hill. The brewery has recently expanded its range of Petrus foeder beers. These traditional Flemish red-brown beers are typical of the region around Kortrijk and Roeselare. To produce his foeder beers, the brewer will use a blond, amber or dark top-fermented beer that has ‘ripened’ for between two and three years on oak barrels. The beer matures in foeders and eventually takes on a freshly sour taste that is not dissimilar to wine. The Petrus range also includes pure foeder beers such as Petrus Aged Pale and ‘versnijbieren’ (cut or blended beers), of which the Petrus Oud Bruin is an example. Not long ago, De Brabandere introduced its ‘sour box’ that allows you to compile your own ideal ‘sour ale’ from a selection of Petrus beers. And, by all means, do not forget to taste the 1894 that was issued to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the brewery.
