Het Anker
Het Anker is a firm fixture in the Mechelen landscape, with roots going back far into the Middle Ages. To this day, this brewery’s ancient recipes lie at the basis of the Gouden Carolus beers. Gouden Carolus is derived from the traditional, regional Mechelse Bruine. Gouden Carolus Classic is brewed with caramel malts, aromatic malt varieties and a quantity of wheat starch, with the addition of Belgian hops, orange peel and coriander. History relates that the Carolus was enjoyed by the 16th-century Holy Roman Emperor Charles V while he was hunting foxes. Undoubtedly, this beer had a different flavour in those days as well as a lower alcohol content. This classic makes for a fine compromise between dry and sweet. Other beers to sample include the fruity Cuvée van de Keizer, the extra-hopped Hopsignoor, the strong blond Lucifer, the blond Maneblusser with its citrusy aromas – a homage to the citizens of Mechelen – or else try the Boscoli fruit beer, based on white beer with the addition of natural fruit juices.
