Huyghe

In 1902 Léon Huyghe set up the brewery that was to bear his name in the village of Melle near Ghent. Huyghe is primarily known for its Delirium Tremens ‘pink elephant’ beer, but this brewer also produces dozens of other beers: pils, top-fermented beers that re-ferment in the bottle in the classic tradition, beers with exotic tastes, regional specialty beers as well as organic, fair trade and gluten-free beers. The brewer in his brewing hall can be compared to a chef in his kitchen. In addition to Delirium Tremens, the range now also includes the dark Delirium Nocturnum and Delirium Christmas, a beer for the end-of-year festivities. Mongozo is an exotic fruit beer, made with mango, banana, coconut and palm nut. Floris is a chocolate beer. The golden blond La Guillotine is made with various types of grain. The range of abbey beers comprises the Sint-Idesbald and the hoppy Averbode. The Delirium Tremens owes its characteristic taste to the use of three different yeast varieties. Its quirky white packaging, reminiscent of Cologneware pottery, is a major factor in the success of this beer, as is its colourful label. This label depicts the various stages of delirium tremens.
