Breweries

Sint Bernardus/h2>

Since 1946 Sint-Bernardus beers have been brewed in a former cheese dairy in Watou, close to the town of Poperinge. The brewery site is a stone’s throw from the famous abbey of Westvleteren. Up until 1992 Sint-Bernardus was licensed to brew the renowned Sint-Sixtus abbey beers to their original recipes. Nowadays, these beers are once again brewed within the abbey walls. The Sint-Bernardus range has been complemented with a light Extra beer, their witbier and a tripel. The assortment of dark beers includes, going from light to strong, the Prior, Pater, Abt and Christmas Ale. All of these beers use the original Westvleteren yeast, Belgian aroma hops as well as the slightly salty, local mineral water. Pierre Celis, the creator of Hoegaarden witbier, was also responsible for the fruity Sint-Bernardus witbier and their Grottenbier. The latter beer is currently being brewed by a microbrewery, De Kazematten in Ypres, where Wipers Times also flows out of the tanks. De Kazematten is a joint project set up by Sint-Bernardus and Rodenbach.
